Why Transplanted Hair Looks Different?

Why Transplanted Hair Looks Different

Transplanted hair can sometimes appear different from your natural hair for several reasons…

    1. Hair Graft Selection – In hair transplantation, hair grafts are typically harvested from the back and sides of the head, known as the donor area. These hairs are genetically programmed to be more resistant to hair loss and may have different characteristics, such as thickness or texture, compared to the hair on the top of the scalp where balding occurs. This can result in a difference in the appearance of the transplanted hair.
    2. Transplantation Technique –  The method used for hair transplantation, whether it’s follicular unit transplantation (FUT) or follicular unit extraction (FUE), can influence how the transplanted hair looks. FUE, for example, involves extracting individual hair follicles, which can sometimes result in a scattered or less natural-looking hairline compared to FUT, where a strip of tissue is removed and then dissected into grafts.
    3. Density and Placement – The density and placement of the transplanted hair also significantly affect how it looks. The surgeon’s skill and expertise in creating a natural hairline and distributing grafts evenly can affect the final result.
    4. Hair Growth Cycle – Transplanted hair goes through a natural growth cycle, including growth, shedding, and regrowth. During this process, the appearance of the transplanted hair can change. It may initially appear thin or fine but can become thicker and coarser.
    5. Post-Transplant Care – Proper post-transplant care and maintenance are essential for the long-term success of a hair transplant. If the transplanted hair is not cared for adequately, it may not grow as expected or may suffer from issues like infection or ingrown hairs, which can affect its appearance.
    6. Natural Variability –  There is natural variability in hair characteristics among individuals. People may have different hair textures, colors, and thicknesses even before hair loss occurs. Transplanted hair may not perfectly match the native hair’s characteristics.
    7. Aging – As a person ages, both transplanted and natural hair may undergo changes in texture and color, which can lead to differences in appearance.

A skilled and experienced hair transplant surgeon will aim to create a result that closely matches your natural hair and looks as natural as possible. Efforts are made to ensure consistency, but there may still be some deviations arising from the factors previously mentioned. Pre-surgical consultations and realistic expectations are crucial when considering a hair transplant procedure
